When electrical service to your home or business is interrupted, a standby generator quickly detects it, starts up, and produces quiet, clean electricity within seconds — so you can get on with your life. It’s that simple. Ryan Electric can help solve your emergency and back-up power needs. We first determine the optimum size of the generator based on your requirements; we can purchase any brand on the market for you (optional); perform the installations and electrical testing and provide follow-on maintenance service.

How Does an Emergency Standby Generator Work?

A standby generator system for emergency power and backup power system typically has three basic elements:

1. Generator - Produces electricity for essential or selected systems like cooling, heating, refrigeration, security and lighting. Your backup needs, simple or more extensive, determine the size and output of the unit. The primary fuels are Natural gas or Propane.

2. Automatic Transfer Switch – senses when power from the utility is lost and automatically transfers to start the emergency generator and provide emergency power. It also senses when power is restored and transfers the load back to the utility source and signals the generator to shut down.

3. Service Entrance Breaker – Provides protection to your transfer switch, internal breakers and circuits and generator due to electrical strikes and power surges.

Types of Coverage:

a. Whole house – the generator will be backing up all electrical loads within the main panel

b. Standby – the generator powers only designated loads that are grouped together and wired into a separate emergency panel.
